The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) today revealed that it has awarded the family of the tragic Jalan Masjid India sinkhole incident victim with a donation of RM30,000 before they left Malaysia on 1 September.
Astro Awani quoted Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif as saying that the cash donation was given to the family of the victim, 48-year-old Indian national Vijayaletchumi, a day after the Government decided to end the search and rescue (SAR) operation for the victim.

When contacted by the news agency, Maimunah stressed that the RM30,000 is not compensation for the incident but rather, a sincere donation from DBKL.
She asserted,
“I would like to clarify here that this is not compensation, this is a sincere donation from DBKL for the victim’s family,”

Meanwhile, de facto Federal Territories Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said that the victim’s family was handed the donation from DBKL and corporate entities.
Previously, she said that the Government would be deliberating giving compensation to the victim’s family, with the matter being discussed in the Cabinet meeting.

Besides that, Sinar Harian reported that Viyajaletchumi’s family expressed their gratitude to the Malaysian Government and the SAR team for their tireless effort during the operation.
The victim’s family asserted,
“We as a family thank the Malaysian Government and the SAR team for giving their all in the search operation,”
