KUALA LUMPUR International Airport Terminal 2 (KLIA2) has seen a marked increase in domestic passenger traffic today as Malaysians return home to celebrate Aidilfitri.
Observers report that city residents are travelling earlier than usual to avoid long queues and road congestion, particularly ahead of the final days before Syawal.
According to Kosmo!’s survey at KLIA2, domestic flights to destinations including Kota Bharu, Kelantan, and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, have recorded a noticeable rise in passenger numbers.
Farah Awang Kechik, a 34-year-old private sector employee, said she chose to fly to Kota Bharu with her young child rather than face potentially long road delays during the festive period. “Considering I have a small child, it would be difficult for him to endure long traffic jams, especially during the holiday season.
“Flying seemed the best option, even though the ticket was slightly more expensive than other public transport,” she said.
Similarly, Khalid Tony, 39, returning to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, explained that he and his family opted to travel earlier to maximise their time at home and avoid the expected peak congestion at KLIA2.
“I was concerned that if we travelled in the final days of Ramadan, KLIA2 would be extremely crowded and less comfortable. We decided to depart more than a week in advance to ensure a calmer journey,” he said.
AirAsia has also issued guidance for passengers at KLIA2, urging them to plan travel in advance for a smoother experience. In a statement, the airline recommended self check-in via the AirAsia MOVE app, available from 14 days up to one hour before scheduled departure.
“Passengers are also advised to download the AirAsia MOVE app to access the latest flight information, including updates via the ‘Flight Status’ link on the app.
Counter check-in is reserved for passengers with disabilities, those travelling with infants under 24 months, pregnant women, senior citizens, and unaccompanied minors,” the statement said.
AirAsia further advised passengers to arrive at the airport at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures during peak travel periods.
“Check-in counters at KLIA2 close one hour before scheduled departure, and 45 minutes prior at other domestic airports across Malaysia,” the airline added.
The early surge in passenger traffic highlights the annual challenge of managing peak Aidilfitri travel, with both airports and airlines emphasising advance planning and digital tools to maintain efficient operations. - March 17, 2026
