In reminiscence, Zul said, “Local food offers the best nutrition, produces less water & supports sustainable agriculture & local economies. Eating local nourishes our families.” Pix: Zarina

One of the reasons my wife, Zarina and I choose to visit a new restaurant is to experience its real food specialty. Traditional dishes are part of a country's heritage and strongly rooted into the local people that have passed the recipes through generations, so trying some of their authentic dishes will give us the opportunity to taste a part of indigenous food of their unique culture. For authentic Malay traditional food in Cyberjaya, we recently found home-style dishes like patin tempoyak & daging salai mask lemak cili api at Kocha Lala, which also offer a variety of classic dishes in a most comfortable atmosphere.

Words reached me that many of my overseas friends and alumni are planning to travel to KL in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia (VM) year 2026. They wanted to experience the local culture is a huge part of travelling and trying traditional food is largely connected with that culture experience. We need to recommend a blend of heritage kampung (village) flavors with a modern touch, featuring traditional Malay dishes alongside Asian options and delicacies.

Cyberjaya has several well-regarded spots for authentic Malay traditional food. The most popular choices, based on reviews, are known for its traditional decor, diverse menus & flavorful dishes that evoke of the “kampung” environment. Kocha Lala Cafe Kampung is cozy & trendy suitable for family reunion.

In my communication with overseas friends, I suggested that they should allocate a few days to visit the countryside to get the feel of the true village and meet the friendly people there. Zarina said “Visit my hometown, Kuala Kangsar, the Royal Town of Perak, is believed to get its name from ‘Kuala Kurang-sa’ which means ‘short of one’ referring to the 99 streams that flow into Sungai Perak, behind my house. Kuala Kangsar Town is now divided into 2 parts.”
