KOTA KINABALU: Four men were each sentenced to 10 months’ jail and fined RM3,000, or seven months’ jail in default, by the Magistrate’s Court here for rioting in an incident that went viral on social media.
Mohammad Irfan, 18, Dedy Risin, 37, Bobbe Rajit, 36, and Mohammad Asrull Mubin, 25, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to rioting as members of an unlawful assembly with the common intention of causing injury to Nelson Malikin.
The offence was committed at about 3.30am on Oct 11 this year along the roadside in front of Mynex Bar, Inanam Taipan, here.
The four were charged under Section 147 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
The court heard that Nelson was assaulted by the four men after he hit one of their friends, Jack Risin, while the latter was crossing the road.
Angered by the incident, the four men kicked Nelson and struck him with helmets, leaving him with a fracture to his left brow bone, as well as bruises and scratches on his face.
He was subsequently taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital I for treatment.
A 23-second video of the incident went viral on social media, leading to the arrest of the four men.
