Kota Kinabalu: The Inner Wheel Club of Kota Kinabalu organised the “Orange the World – End Violence against Women and Girls” at Ujana Rimba Park, here, recently.
It was held in conjunction with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls, as part of the global campaign to raise awareness and mobilise efforts to end all forms of violence.
It was the second year the Inner Wheel Club of Kota Kinabalu organised the campaign.
Club President Margaret Michael Awang said the programme was part of a worldwide movement to amplify the message of “Orange the World,” a campaign led by the United Nations since 2008.
The colour orange was chosen as a symbol of hope, optimism and a brighter future free from violence.
She added that the campaign is also part of the annual “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence,” which runs from Nov 25 to Dec 10.
Activities include awareness talks and light exercise.
During the gathering, participants were shown a gesture where a hand is raised with four fingers lifted and folded up and down, signifying a call for help.
The session also featured warm-ups led by a physiotherapist from QE Hospital (1), followed by a round of walking or light jogging around the park.
Among the NGOs supporting the event were the Rotary Clubs of Pearl, Luyang, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu and Kinabalu Sutera. Government agencies also took part, including the dental departments of Luyang, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Putatan, as well as JEHWA and DBKK.
A physiotherapist from Queen Elizabeth Hospital I, who served as the exercise instructor, joined the activities together with students from Kota Kinabalu High School.
