Tuaran: The water supply problem plaguing Kota Kinabalu – including Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Tuaran – is expected to be fully resolved next month.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said this was made possible with increasing the capacity of the Telibong Phase Two Water Treatment Plant in Tamparuli from 80 Million Litres Daily (MLD) to 160 MLD.
“This project was implemented due to the growing population and rapid development in the entire Northern and Central areas of Sabah.
“This causes the water demand for domestic, commercial and industrial use to increase from time to time,” he said, after a briefing by the State Water Department, Public Works Department (JKR) and other agencies on the status of the project, here, Saturday.

“We take into account the final cost which will take two weeks. The solution estimate including material costs is to be informed to the federal government since this project was acquired through a loan.
“So, we will discuss to find additional funds through the available allocation, especially in the form of loans to solve it,” he said.
Fadillah was also on a working visit to the Main Distribution Substation Project (PPU) from Gudon to Telipok as well as the Integrated River Basin Development Project of Sungai Moyog.
Present was Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau who is also Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) Chairman.
According to Fadillah with the implementation of this project the water storage capacity would also increase from 94.6 million litres (JL) to 163.3 JL, with the expansion of its storage tank.
The increase in water supply and capacity would involve an estimated 441,000 people and increase supply to Tuaran, Telipok, Menggatal, Inanam and Likas.
“This project is 94.57 per cent complete and is expected to be fully completed in February 2024,” he said.
Additionally, he said the Gudon PPU Distribution project up to Telipok was built to increase the supply of electricity to the Gudon, Sepanggar and surrounding areas due to increased load capacity. It would ensure consumers in the Gudon area enjoy reliable electricity supply.
“This project is 49 per cent complete and expected to be fully operational in August 2024.
“For the Moyog River Integrated River Basin Development project involving Package Three, it aims to reduce flooding in affected areas around the Moyog River, especially in Kepayan, Kibabaig township, Donggongan township and Putatan township.
“The implementation of this project will be able to reduce the frequency of floods thus improving the quality of life of the people in these areas.
“This project is 82.64 per cent complete and is expected to be fully completed in December 2024,” he added.
