KOTA MARUDU: The Kota Marudu Public Park has become a popular stop for visitors since Aug 20, with many arriving to capture photographs and enjoy the colourful blooms of the Tacoma tree, also known locally as Malaysia’s ‘Sakura’.

The sight has drawn not only residents from the district but also visitors from Pitas, Matunggong and Kudat, eager to see the blossoms before they fall.

District Officer Meirin Sugara said she was delighted to see the trees sparking joy, with social media filled with photos captioned “like in Japan” that caught wide attention.

She explained that the Tacoma tree usually flowers during hot or dry seasons, with a similar phenomenon last recorded in September 2018, though this year has seen more trees producing blooms in shades of pink, white and yellow.

To add to the festivities, Bandau Youth Assembly member Datu Muhammad Farid Datu Liman organised a small contest rewarding the most popular blossom-themed photos on social media, further highlighting the beauty of the district’s floral season.
