KPDN probes viral claim of fish found inside squid

Kota Kinabalu: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) Sabah has carried out inspections following a viral social media post alleging that squid sold at the Kota Kinabalu Central Market contained fish inside their bodies.

Its director, Shahril Nizam Shahidin, said an enforcement team was immediately deployed to the wet market to investigate the claim and obtain clarification from the trader involved.

He said preliminary findings showed the trader denied deliberately placing fish inside the squid to increase weight, explaining that both were caught together and the fish may have entered the squid naturally while still in the catch.

Shahril added that further inspections found the trader to be fully compliant with existing regulations, with properly displayed price tags and a weighing scale that had a valid verification certificate.

He said KPDN would continue monitoring the situation and advised traders to carry out proper checks on seafood products before sale, while encouraging consumers to lodge complaints through official channels if necessary.
