Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming today announced that Klang is set to receive an upgrade to city status soon, making it the 20th city in Malaysia.

This was agreed upon and approved via a recent Cabinet meeting and accordingly, the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) will be upgraded to the Klang City Council (MBK).

In a statement by the Local Government Development Ministry (KPKT) today, Nga said that the upgrade would further strengthen Klang as a competitive global city and port. It would also become a regional economic growth factor, improve the people’s quality of life and boost Malaysia’s competitiveness.

MPK was established in 1890 and at 133 years old, has now fulfilled all the required criteria to achieve city status. These include having a population of more than 500,000 people and an annual income of over RM100 million from sustainable sources.

Last year, Klang was listed among the top 10 happiest towns in our country and the latest census showed that the town officially has 902,000 residents, though the real number could be more.

The date of Klang’s transition to a city will be announced after it has received Royal assent from the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

With the upgrade to city status, the state of Selangor will be home to four cities in our country, namely Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya and of course, Klang, which will also become a Royal city.
