KPop Demon Hunters 2 theatrical release

When KPop Demon Hunters premiered on Netflix in June 2025, few could have predicted just how far the animated musical would travel beyond the streaming platform. Now, the sequel is preparing to make an even bigger leap: from streaming sensation to theatrical event. Here is everything to know about KPop Demon Hunters 2, including its theatrical release plans, expected release year, returning creative team, possible story directions and what the film’s success could mean for Netflix.

The animated film began as a story about a fictional K-pop girl group secretly protecting the world from demons and soon became a global pop-culture phenomenon, fuelled by chart-topping songs, a devoted fandom and merchandise collaborations that took HUNTR/X well beyond the screen. With Netflix now openly discussing a broad global cinema release, KPop Demon Hunters 2 could become a defining test of whether the platform’s biggest streaming hits can also succeed as theatrical blockbusters.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has confirmed that KPop Demon Hunters 2 is expected to receive a broad theatrical release.

Speaking at Bloomberg Screentime on 30 September 2026, Sarandos said, “When the KPop Demon Hunters sequel comes, you can expect a very broad theatrical release.” Deadline reported his comments as part of its coverage of Netflix’s evolving approach to cinema distribution. Sarandos also described the company’s plans for selected films as “big, broad, global” releases.

This is a significant change from the release strategy used for the original KPop Demon Hunters. The first film premiered directly on Netflix on 20 June 2025, before its popularity prompted limited theatrical sing-along screenings. The sequel, by contrast, is being positioned for a much wider cinema rollout.

Sarandos explained that Netflix is considering different approaches for different types of films. Art-house titles and large family films do not necessarily benefit from the same distribution strategy. In Deadline’s report, he identified KPop Demon Hunters as the kind of family film with the potential to attract a passionate audience to cinemas.

Is there a release date for KPop Demon Hunters 2?

The animated film is targeting a 2029 release, although this is not a confirmed premiere date.

Animation is a lengthy production process, and the release target could change as work progresses. For now, 2029 is the reported target rather than a date fans can mark on their calendars with certainty.

Netflix has also not confirmed whether the film will premiere in cinemas simultaneously worldwide or roll out across territories in stages. Its theatrical plans are broad in scope, but further distribution details are still awaited.

Who is returning for KPop Demon Hunters 2?

Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning for the sequel.

Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation confirmed the sequel in March 2026, with both filmmakers returning to write and direct the follow-up. The project is part of a new multi-year writing and directing deal with Netflix across animation.

Kang has spoken about the potential to explore more of the world introduced in the first film. In a July 2026 interview with Variety, she noted that there were unanswered questions left by the original story. That leaves room for the sequel to explore the characters’ backgrounds and the mythology surrounding HUNTR/X and Saja Boys.

The returning directors are confirmed, but a complete voice cast for the sequel has not yet been announced.
