Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, widely known as Ku Li, has thrown his support behind Datuk Dr. Akmal Saleh, the Umno Youth Chief, following the latter's recent controversial remarks about Seputeh MP Teresa Kok. The uproar, which centers on the debate surrounding mandatory halal certification, has stirred tensions between political factions. Ku Li’s backing suggests that Akmal’s actions are in line with Umno's foundational principles, as outlined in the party's constitution, which prioritizes the defense of Malay-Muslim rights.

Akmal’s vocal stance emerged after Kok questioned the proposal to enforce mandatory halal certification for food establishments that do not serve pork or alcohol. In a TikTok video, Akmal retaliated by making remarks that were widely seen as offensive, calling Kok rudely and suggesting she refrain from interfering in Islamic affairs. Kok, outraged by the comments, issued a letter of demand, threatening to sue Akmal for RM25 million unless he retracted the statements and issued an apology.

However, Akmal has made it clear that he is prepared to face Kok in court, further deepening the divide. His refusal to back down has prompted various responses, with some calling for calm, while others argue that Akmal’s defiance is a reflection of Umno’s evolving stance on sensitive cultural issues.

Ku Li defended Akmal, emphasizing that his outspokenness should not be misconstrued as an attack on other ethnic groups. He explained that Akmal’s comments were consistent with Umno’s enduring struggle to champion Malay-Muslim issues, a cause central to the party’s identity. The former Gua Musang MP highlighted that while Umno remains a Malay nationalist party, it continues to value and respect the support of other races. He dismissed calls for Akmal to apologize, stating that the youth chief was merely expressing a "sincere opinion."

The incident has raised deeper questions about Umno’s current role in Malaysia's multi-ethnic political landscape. Johor DAP leader Dr. Boo Cheng Hau called for Akmal to apologize not only to Kok but also to Malaysians as a whole, accusing him of disrespecting the constitutional rights of non-Muslims. This reflects the broader tension surrounding the delicate balance between promoting Islamic principles and maintaining harmony in a pluralistic society.

Akmal’s unwillingness to apologize signals a potential shift in the way Umno addresses ethnic and religious issues, while Ku Li’s support underscores the party’s commitment to its original ethos. The controversy surrounding the halal certification debate, however, could widen the gap between political leaders and the rakyat, as Malaysians wrestle with where the line should be drawn between free expression and mutual respect in a diverse nation.

The legal battle between Akmal and Kok will likely have lasting implications not just for the two individuals but for the political landscape as a whole. As the dispute unfolds, it will test the limits of political discourse in Malaysia, challenging both Umno’s identity and its relationships with other communities.
