Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching addressed speculation about whether DAP Vice Chairman Teresa Kok and Umno Youth Leader Datuk Dr. Muhammad Akmal Saleh would share a stage during the upcoming Mahkota State Assembly by-election campaign. At a press conference held at the National Information Dissemination Center (Nadi) in Kluang, Teo emphasized that the decision lies with the election director.

When asked about the possibility of both leaders appearing together at the campaign event, Teo noted, “This is up to the election director to determine the best approach for organizing the event. I am not in a position to answer that as I am not the election director.”

Teo also admitted uncertainty regarding Teresa Kok's participation in the Johor campaign, stating, “I am not sure whether YB Teresa Kok will come down (to campaign) or not.” His comments come amidst a backdrop of recent tensions between the two political figures over the contentious issue of halal certification.

The situation escalated on September 11 when Teresa Kok, who represents the Seputeh constituency, announced that she would seek RM25 million in damages from Dr. Akmal. She accused him of misrepresenting her statements regarding halal certification, a topic that has generated significant public debate. In addition to the damages, Kok is also demanding compensation for all related costs stemming from the controversy.

Dr. Akmal, for his part, has expressed a willingness to face legal action from Kok. He stated that he is unfazed by the potential lawsuit and is ready to meet her in court, adding a layer of drama to the already heated discourse surrounding the issue.

Teo's comments reflect the delicate balance both parties must maintain as they navigate the electoral landscape in Johor. With the Mahkota by-election on the horizon, the question of whether Kok and Akmal can set aside their differences for a shared campaign stage remains open. The dynamics between DAP and Umno are especially significant given the sensitive context of their recent interactions.
