KUALA PENYU: Despite being a rural district, Kuala Penyu for the first time topped the District Average Grade (GPD) achievement for 2021 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations.
Recording a 4.87 GPD, Kuala Penyu even surpassed the achievements of urban areas, such as Penampang (4.93) and Kota Kinabalu (4.93) as well as Tawau (5.11) which are ranked second, third and fourth respectively compared to 24 districts throughout Sabah.
District Education Officer Suntik Tuin said the achievement was contributed by the success of outstanding students, parents and teachers.
He said this in addition to the role of Kuala Penyu Assemblyman Datuk Limus Jury through the Limus Jury Education Foundation (YPLJ), which provided laptops to students to aid them in their online classes during the Movement Control Order (MCO) previously.
“They are actually the superheroes that facilitated the best achievements of 14 outstanding students in SPM last year.
“In fact, I also always advise students that they just need to focus on learning.
“Don’t think about the expenses for further studies because we have YPLJ funds that are often envied by other district education offices, how lucky the people of Kuala Penyu are,” he said, hoping that YPLJ’s contribution would be fully utilised by the students.
Echoing Suntik’s sentiments, a 57-year-old retiree Misol Anggang from Kg Janang revealed that Limus’ concern through YPLJ contributes a lot to the development of education, especially for local children.
“I am very grateful and thankful to Limus for donating a laptop set and a RM2,000 cheque for a flight ticket for my daughter,” he said while accompanying his eldest daughter, Brenda Misol, 21, a second year communication student who will leave for Sultan Idris Education University in Perak next October.
The foundation, which was inspired by Limus himself, was established in 2013 and has helped more than 3,000 students to date.
Assistance under the foundation included laptop sets as well as one-off assistance of RM1,500 to RM2,500 to cover flight tickets to Peninsular Malaysia and expenses at Institutions of Higher Learning (IPTs).
On Saturday, Limus handed over funds to 50 students furthering their studies and laptop sets to 100 students.
He also handed over RM30,000 to Suntik for the school’s PTA fund and RM20,000 to District Headmaster Council Chairman Nordin Tuin for the Headmaster Council, who was accompanied by District Officer Sebastian Ingkim at the Shahbandar Makang Hall.
