KUALA LUMPUR – A 16-year-old student has been arrested after allegedly bringing firecrackers and an axe to an international school in Kuching, where a female teacher was injured in an attack this morning.
Sarawak acting police commissioner Saifullizan Ishak said police received information about the incident at 8.03am through the MERS 999 emergency line.
The incident has sparked alarm on social media, where videos purportedly showing the attack, including CCTV footage released by the school and footage believed to have been recorded by the student while livestreaming the incident, have circulated widely.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the male student had brought firecrackers to the school before allegedly injuring the teacher with an axe, he said.
“The victim reportedly sustained a cut to her hand during the incident,” Saifullizan said in a statement today.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon or dangerous object, as well as Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 1957 concerning the possession of explosives.
The student has been arrested and is currently being held in the psychiatric ward of Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, he added.
Saifullizan said police were conducting a detailed investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish what had led to the alleged attack.
“Police are carrying out a thorough investigation to establish the actual cause of the incident and gather all relevant evidence,” he said. - October 21, 2026
