Kylian Mbappe has reopened the conversation around Neymar’s Brazil future with a message few expected given their fractured past.
The pair spent five seasons together at PSG, forming one of Europe’s most feared attacks before tensions overshadowed their partnership.
Their relationship deteriorated towards the end, with reports linking Mbappe to Neymar’s exit. Today, they do not even follow each other on Instagram.
However, that has not stopped the Frenchman of praising his former teammate.
Kylian Mbappe backs Neymar for 2026 World Cup

Mbappe struck a respectful tone when asked about Neymar’s chances of making Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad.
“I think [the Brazilian national team] can be for both [Neymar and Vinicius Jr.]. The truth is that Vini needs to take another step in the National Team, but Neymar is Neymar,” he said to GE TV.
“Neymar is a great player. The World Cup is for the stars. And, in my book, Neymar is one of the biggest stars. I don’t see a World Cup without Neymar. But, in the end, I can’t go against my former coach, who is Ancelotti, so we have to respect his decision.”
Despite their PSG fallout, Mbappe acknowledged Neymar’s influence and quality once more.
“Neymar is a player who makes a big difference. I played with him, I learned a lot from him. We’ll see how he’s doing, but I know Neymar, he’ll prepare for the World Cup and he’ll be there.”
Carlo Ancelotti responds to Neymar criticism
Carlo Ancelotti addressed the growing scrutiny around Neymar’s absence from recent Brazil squads ahead of facing France.
“I observe everything. It’s normal, everyone in football can have an opinion. There’s no clear science to football. Everyone has their own opinion. I have to respect everyone’s opinion.”
The Brazil manager made clear he is unfazed by external pressure. At 66 years old and with a stacked trophy room, he was not supposed to feel the heat either way.
