Kota Kinabalu: A labourer was fined RM1,000 or two months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here for assaulting a man.

Shamri Nurhasad, 38, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to voluntarily causing hurt to Maruni Ekar by punching his left eye at 3pm on Jan 16, this year, at the Shore’s temporary furniture workshop, here.

Shamri’s case came up for trial on Tuesday but he informed the court of his wish to change his plea to guilty to the charge.

The charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to one year or fine of up to RM2,000 or both, on conviction.

Shamri suddenly punched the victim’s left eye, said the prosecution.

Meanwhile, five people were penalised for committing drug-related offences.

Filipinos Toli Binang, 23, Raffy Abdullah, 27, and Mohd Johari George, 50, separately admitted to having syabu weighing 0.08gm, 0.02gm and 0.30gm, respectively between Nov 11, 2023 and Feb 16, this year, here.

Johari was sentenced to 10 months jail while the foreigners were jailed nine months each and ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter.

They were charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years jail or both on conviction.

Another two men, Md Suhailee Ruslan, 24, and Almukri Ramli, 29, pleaded guilty to taking syabu in Penampang and city centre on Feb 7, this year and Dec 14, last year.

Suhailee was handed 21 months in jail while Almukri was jailed six months and ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter.
