Labuan bakery fined over missing bread price tags

LABUAN: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in Labuan has issued a RM300 compound to a bakery for failing to display cash selling prices on bread sold at its premises.

Labuan KPDN Director Junaidah Arbain said the action followed consumer complaints, prompting enforcement officers to inspect the premises at about 11am on Sunday.

She said the action reflected the ministry’s commitment to taking public feedback seriously and protecting consumer rights.

“The inspection found that various types of bread displayed on the sales shelves did not have clear cash selling price tags.

“Failure to display prices could make it difficult for consumers to determine the actual cost of goods before making their choices and proceeding with purchases,” she said on Monday.

Junaidah said the compound was issued under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering (Price Marking for Goods and Charges for Services) Order 2020, made under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 (Act 723).

She said individuals convicted of the offence could face a fine of up to RM50,000, while companies or corporations could be fined up to RM100,000.

Junaidah stressed that compliance with price-marking regulations was not merely a business obligation but also essential to ensuring consumers received accurate and transparent information before making purchases.

“Consumers have the right to know the prices of goods without having to make assumptions or seek clarification after making their selections.

“Hence, I urge all traders to ensure that every item offered for sale is accompanied by a clear and easily visible price tag,” she said.

She warned that failure to comply could result in enforcement action and undermine consumer confidence in a business.

Junaidah added that consumer feedback played an important role in promoting a more transparent, responsible and ethical business environment.
