Kota Kinabalu: The construction of a proposed bridge linking the Federal Territory of Labuan and Sabah has the potential to help boost economic growth as well as develop large and small industries in both areas.
Kadayan Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DPPKM) Deputy President Mohd Faizal Malik said the proposal could also bring a positive impact on the economy of Sabah and Labuan.
“We have also looked comprehensively at the potential benefits to big industrial players, small and medium industries (SMI), traders and the general public.
“They can choose to use the delivery services direct from the suppliers from Sabah without using courier services or through ferry services,” he said in a statement, Wednesday.
Mohd Faizal also said there would be more potential for logistics service providers between Labuan and Sabah.
Besides that, he also viewed the construction of the proposed bridge as having the potential for every other services, including expanding the concept of e-hailing for both areas.
With the construction of the bridge, the coverage of e-hailing services could be expanded and eventually stimulate Labuan-Sabah business activities, he said.
“The Sabah Government and the Federal Territory of Labuan, through their respective departments and agencies, can work together to increase the platform for traders to increase their sales revenue.
“For example, a monthly market event for traders from Sabah and Labuan to set up stalls by the petty traders and hawkers,” he said.
He further said the proposed construction of the bridge would provide access to the public, especially the B40 group who cannot afford to travel back and forth by plane or ferry to Labuan and Sabah.
But with the presence of a bridge, they have a choice besides travelling by air or ferry, he added.
