LABUAN: The economic boom looming ahead in Sipitang presents a golden opportunity for Labuan to serve as the Rest and Recreation (R&R) centre for the nearby quiet coastal town and draw economic gains from the new wave.
Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii said it has been reported that Sipitang has been earmarked for several mega industrial projects that will see thousands stationed there to handle the developments.
“Labuan is the closest major town with developed facilities in many sectors, including medical, F&B and so should be a natural convenient venue for weary workers to break here during week-ends and holidays.”
However, Wong stressed that such economic benefit from Siptang will not spillover here unless the authorities further enhanced the island’s charm by restoring the legendary duty-free privileges of the island such duty-free cigarettes, increased shopping limit, including having in place a marine shuttle serve between here and Sipitang and operating till night.
