KUALA LUMPUR: REXKL is back with another wait-worthy event in the first week of November, immersing you in the vibrant world of Y2K nostalgia! In line with the market’s theme, it showcases a diverse array of fantastic local businesses specializing in Y2K merchandise.
As the venue is accessible by public transport, the market attracted a large number of locals and foreign travellers who came and supported local businesses to grab something special to take home. While Sunday’s crowd was slightly smaller than Saturday’s, everyone still ensured they found something they loved and grabbed it home!
The majority of the vendors offer Y2K accessories, clothing, stickers, tattoos, and CCD cameras, which are currently in trend. Out of all the extraordinary vendors, “The Cat’s Fang” stands out with its unique offering of tooth gems. It’s interesting to note that Malaysia has a unique niche for such products, as it is not very popular locally but is a fashionable trend in foreign countries. Plus, it's also amazing that they are able to provide the service at a market like this one.
Eileen, the owner of “The Cat’s Fang”, faced initial challenges when starting her business, such as stereotypes from older generations who think that putting something on one’s teeth is unusual and have concerns about accidentally ingesting it. Despite all the hardships and obstacles, Eileen remained determined to pioneer the tooth gem market in Malaysia, thinking that there was a need for providing such a service in Malaysia. And she did it! She has now become the top-ranking tooth gem service in Malaysia, with the vision of making everyone’s “smile dazzling at a time”.
One of the tooth gem customers, Hazel, mentioned that she had been thinking about it for quite a while, and finally she got the chance to try it here. The tooth gems were so dazzling and stunning that she couldn’t resist the temptation. Now it seems understandable why people enjoy visiting markets or bazaars, as you can’t resist not doing or buying something when you are already there!
Another unique vendor at the market is “Monomono”, offering a variety of fancy and extravagent Y2K accessories at budget-friendly prices. The owner of “Monomono”, Crystal, who shares a fondness for Y2K aesthetics, was prompted to establish her own business selling Y2K accessories. While this wasn’t her first time joining a market as a vendor, this Ladies Market was incredibly one of her favourite vendor experiences to date!
Being part of the Y2K fashion trend isn’t just a hobby for Crystal, but also a thriving career. Seeing all the lovely girls indulge themselves in cute and affordable purchases as a way to treat themselves inspired Crystal to offer even more exquisite accessories to her customers.
Despite the limited and narrow space, the organizer, Curators Lab, still managed to slay the event flawlessly. All the vendors were so satisfied with how Curators Lab efficiently allocated and utilized the spaces, enabling them to showcase their marvellous products and allowing customers to shop comfortably without feeling crowded or having to push through.
It was an amazing experience to see all the talented and dedicated local artists pursuing their passions and careers. Kudos to Curators Lab for organizing such an awesome event that promotes local businesses with a Y2K theme. Hopefully, there will be more events like this in the future, allowing Malaysians to support their fellow Malaysians. Together, we support the locals!
