A large number of people cast their vote during the first phase of the panchayat elections in Lahaul and Spiti district on Tuesday. Voters, including women and elderly from remote villages, turned out in a large number to exercise their right to franchise despite challenging geographical conditions. In Lahaul block, 66.77 per cent polling was reported in 12 panchayats. A male voting percentage of 67.99 was recorded while the female voting percentage stood at 65.49.

Out of 6,758 registered voters, including 3,315 women, in 12 panchayats, 4,512 cast their vote. Officials said that the polling was peaceful throughout the day and voters actively participated in the democratic process.

Spiti block also registered 74.67 per cent polling in five panchayats, higher than the voter turnout recorded in Lahaul block. The male voter turnout in the block was 68.86 per cent, while the women polling percentage was 79.96.

The five panchayats of Spiti block had a total of 3,691 registered voters, including 1,931 women, and 2,756, including 1,544 women of these exercised their right to franchise.
