A land dispute turned fatal at Shergarh Gian Singh village in Muktsar district late on Friday evening as a 48-year-old advocate was allegedly murdered after being run over by a tractor, while a rival also suffered a bullet injury.
The deceased, identified as Gurjeet Singh Mann, a resident of Muktsar town, had gone to his fields when a clash reportedly erupted with another faction led by Kamaljit Singh. According to the police, both parties owned adjoining agricultural land and had a dispute over a culvert.
Family members of the deceased alleged that Gurjeet was intentionally run over by a tractor during the altercation.
“We have registered a murder case against Kamaljit Singh, his father Banta Singh, son Jagmeet Singh and an unidentified person,” said Sub-Inspector Kulbir Chand, Malout Sadar police station house officer.
Meanwhile, Kamaljit Singh also reportedly sustained a bullet injury during the incident and has been admitted to AIIMS-Bathinda for treatment. Dhanwant Singh Uppal, president of the District Bar Association, Muktsar, said Gurjeet was a respected member of the association and demanded a fair investigation into the case. The deceased is survived by his parents, wife and a son, who studies in Ludhiana.
