Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have both been disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix in a dramatic moment in the 2025 F1 title race.

The seismic post-race development means Max Verstappen, who won in Vegas, is now just 24 points behind championship leader Norris and moves level on points with Piastri with two rounds remaining. Norris had initially extended his lead to his McLaren teammate Piastri to 30 points after finishing second in Vegas, with the Australian only coming home in fourth place.

Yet post-race analysis of both McLaren cars from the FIA found excessive skid plank wear on both cars, with the minimum thickness falling below the 9mm threshold. As a result, the matter was referred to the stewards, who disqualified both cars from the race classification.

It means Norris now only has a 24-point advantage with two rounds – Qatar and Abu Dhabi – remaining and 58 points, courtesy of the sprint race in Qatar, still left to play for. Follow all the latest reaction from the Las Vegas GP, below:

Lando Norris hit by McLaren’s all-time F1 screw-up but one move can still save title dream

The first sign that something was amiss, under the bamboozling lightshow that is the Las Vegas strip, came in the final three laps. Out of nowhere, why was Lando Norris’s pace dropping off at a rate of knots? Safely in second place, seven seconds behind the race leader, Norris eventually finished 23 seconds off Max Verstappen. Now, we know why.

Norris’s shock disqualification from the Las Vegas Grand Prix, announced just after 1:30am local time, has handed his F1 title rivals the biggest of reprieves. Ironically, the double McLaren DSQ – with Oscar Piastri’s race result wiped out for the same reason, excessive plank wear on the car – is a much-needed saving grace for the Australian. His deficit was 30 points; now it’s back to the original 24 points.

FIA statement on McLaren disqualifications

17:00 , Mike Jones

A statement from the FIA stewards details: “The rear skids of Car 4 and Car 81 were measured and found to be below the minimum thickness of 9mm specified under Article 3.5.9 of the Technical Regulations.

“The relevant measurements were RHS Front 8.88mm, RHS Rear 8.93mm (Norris); RHS Front 8.96mm, 8.74mm (Piastri). The measuring device was a Mitutoyo Micrometre purchased in May 2025 and according to the manufacturer’s specifications, accurate to within 0.001mm.

“The rear skids were re-measured in the presence of the steward and the three McLaren representatives and those measurements confirmed that the skids did not comply with the regulations. The relevant measurements were even lower than those measured originally by the Technical Delegate.”

Can Verstappen win the championship?

16:40 , Mike Jones

Speaking before Norris and Piastri were disqualified, Verstappen spoke about his prospects of winning the drivers’ title.

"It's still a big gap, we always try and maximise everything we've got,” he said.

"In upcoming weekends we will try and win the race and at the end of Abu Dhabi we will see where we end up, but I'm very proud of everyone.

"We've had a up and down season and tough times, but also some really beautiful moments.

"We learnt a lot throughout the whole season and that's always very valuable for the upcoming years.

"It's something that we have to cling onto and just try and improve even more and come back stronger for next year and to put a fight at the start of the year in the championship.

"We are enjoying it now and we will see next week what we can do again."

Max Verstappen reacts to Las Vegas win

16:20 , Mike Jones

"It was good, in practice we didn't really know what the tyres were going to do,” Max Verstappen explained after his victory in Las Vegas.

"In the race you could just see that everyone was just trying to find the rhythm and see how much you can push, especially in the first stint because you're on the more fragile tyre. It worked really well.

"Normally the race is always a tough one for us, we are not normally that great on tyres, but today it seemed like we were more in control and I could push a little bit more.

"We had a lot more pace and I could stay out a little bit longer and split the race in half and that definitely helped a lot.

"The car was working pretty well, much more to my liking and at the end it was quite a decent lap. Every lap I was just feeling comfortable and not taking too much out of the tyre."

Lewis Hamilton crestfallen after ‘worst F1 season ever’ in debut Ferrari campaign

14:40 , Kieran Jackson

Lewis Hamilton labelled his debut Ferrari campaign the “worst season ever” after finishing 10th at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

After qualifying at the back-of-the-grid in Vegas – for the first time on pure pace in his F1 career – the 40-year-old British driver jumped up to 12th early on but eventually finished 10th, scoring one solitary point.

Despite the recovery drive, Hamilton was still despondent in the media pen afterwards following a difficult fortnight, with a retirement at the last round in Brazil and criticism from Ferrari chairman John Elkann to “talk less and focus on driving.”

Can Norris win the title in Qatar?

14:20 , Kieran Jackson

After disqualification in Las Vegas, Lando Norris’ lead to both Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen is down to 24 points.

However, by the end of the final sprint race of the year at the penultimate round in Qatar, Piastri and Verstappen would need to be within 50 points of Norris to stand a mathematical chance of catching him. With a maximum of eight points in the sprint, Norris now can’t win the title in the Qatar sprint race. The worst situation for both chasing drivers is a deficit of 32 points.

Therefore, the earliest Norris can win the title is the grand prix in Qatar on Sunday 30 November.

When can Lando Norris win the 2025 F1 world championship?

14:00 , Mike Jones

Lando Norris is still in position to win the 2025 F1 world championship despite disqualification from the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver’s grip on the title was weakened after the FIA’s investigation into the skid blocks underneath both drivers’ cars, with Max Verstappen winning the race on The Strip.

Norris had finished second, after a mistake on pole at the opening corner had dropped him behind Verstappen and Mercedes’ George Russell.

But after both McLaren drivers’ points were wiped off, Norris’ lead has been chopped from 30 to 24 points clear of both Piastri and Verstappen with just 58 left on the table across the concluding two rounds.

It means the 26-year-old Englishman could still secure the world title with a round to spare at next weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix.

F1 World Drivers' Championship: Latest odds after Norris and Piastri disqualified

13:40 , Jack Rathborn

Despite the huge set-back for Lando Norris, the Briton remains a strong favourite with the bookies to land that world title.

But Verstappen has closed in significantly and is considered much more likely to beat out Norris than the McLaren teammate Piastri:

  • Lando Norris - 2/9
  • Max Verstappen - 3/1
  • Oscar Piastri - 18/1

McLaren have apologised to Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri after both drivers were disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix in a dramatic moment in the 2025 F1 title race.

"That's what I will put my effort into and just try to have some good results."

Lando Norris reacts to ‘frustrating’ Las Vegas GP disqualification

12:32 , Kieran Jackson

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have accepted their “frustrating” double disqualification from the Las Vegas Grand Prix due to skid wear issues on their McLaren F1 car.

McLaren issued an apology to both Norris and Piastri after the loss of points at a critical stage of the season, and the championship leader said it was “a frustrating end to today”.

“We had to do some managing towards the end of the race and now we know it was due to some issues on our car, which have unfortunately resulted in us being disqualified,” Norris said.

“It’s frustrating to lose so many points. As a team, we’re always pushing to find as much performance as we can, and we clearly didn’t get that balance right today.

“Nothing I can do will change that now, instead full focus switches to Qatar, where we'll aim to go out and deliver the best possible performance in every session.”

What Norris and Piastri's disqualification means for the title race

12:20 , Mike Jones

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have both been disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix meaning their chances of winning the drivers’ championship title have taken a huge hit.

Norris still leads the standings but is now only 24 points ahead of his teammate Piastri, and perhaps more pressingly, also Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Verstappen is a four time World Champion and will have his sights set on pipping both McLaren’s to victory with two races left in the season.

There are 58 points left on offer in Qatar and Abu Dhabi which will no doubt set up a thrilling end to the campaign.

Why have Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri been disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix?

10:45 , Kieran Jackson

Norris and Piastri have been punished for an illegal post-race car, with the thickness of the plank, which is underneath the car, below the required 9mm thickness as per the FIA regulations.

The skid wear is monitored so teams don’t run their cars too low to the ground for a performance benefit.

FIA STATEMENT CONTINUED:

10:18 , Kieran Jackson

“Accordingly the stewards determined that a breach of the technical regulations have occurred. The stewards then heard submissions on penalty.

“The team argued that mitigating circumstances existed in that there was additional and unexpected porpoising at this event, limited opportunity to test due to the weather on day 1, and shortened practice sessions.

“Further, the team submitted that the degree of the breach was lower than prior breaches of this regulation in 2025.

“The FIA argued that unfortunately there was no provision in the regulations or in precedent for any penalty other than the usual penalty (i.e. disqualification). The FIA noted that it strongly held the view that the breach was unintentional and that there was not deliberate attempt to circumvent the regulations.

“The stewards also note the various decisions of the FIA International Court of Appeal, which limit the ability to avoid disqualification for technical breaches.”

FULL STORY: Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri disqualified from Las Vegas GP in seismic F1 title swing

10:06 , Kieran Jackson

UPDATE: McLaren personnel in with stewards for more than an hour

09:40 , Kieran Jackson

Such is the stakes at play, we’re hearing that McLaren team personnel were in with the stewards for over an hour.

Did they have any basis for defending the technical rule break?

Still we wait...

image is not available

What does the FIA rulebook say about plank wear?

09:27 , Kieran Jackson

The specific section of the FIA rulebook states: “The thickness of the plank assembly measured normal to the lower surface must be 10mm [plus or minus] 0.2mm and must be uniform when new.

“A minimum thickness of 9mm will be accepted due to wear, and conformity to this provision will be checked at the peripheries of the designated holes.”

No confirmation yet

09:10 , Kieran Jackson

Can we read anything into the fact that the decision has not been confirmed yet?

Usually, these plank wear irregularities are a slam-dunk DSQ. Have McLaren found a way out?

It is now beyond 1am in Vegas. Norris and a team representative visited the stewards over 75 minutes ago.

We continue to wait...

8. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari)

9. Esteban Ocon (Haas)

10. Ollie Bearman (Haas)

Ocon and Bearman could profit

08:42 , Kieran Jackson

Of course, both McLaren cars being disqualified would promote 11th and 12th to the top-10.

Esteban Ocon and Ollie Bearman, both Haas drivers, would therefore score points.

Further up, George Russell would be promoted to second with Kimi Antonelli securing the strangest of top-three finishes.

Norris present with stewards

08:32 , Kieran Jackson

It is understood that Norris and a McLaren team representative visited the stewards at 23:45 local time (07:45 GMT) on Saturday night – more than two hours after the chequered flag fell.

It’s now 12:30am local time.

UPDATE - McLaren are arguing in the stewards room

08:15 , Kieran Jackson

We understand McLaren bosses are arguing their case in the stewards’ room.

Not entirely sure what their defence can be. We’ve seen the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc - in China back in March - disqualified in similar circumstances.

Excessive plank wear is usually a slam dunk disqualification.

We await further news as I’m sure does Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, in a dream development for the Dutchman.

2. Oscar Piastri (McLaren) – 366 points

3. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – 366 points

FIA technical report:

07:55 , Kieran Jackson

The report from FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer reads as follows: “The skid wear of car numbers 81 (Piastri) and 04 (Norris) was checked.

“The rearmost skid was measured on both cars according to the team’s legality documents submission in accordance with TD039 M, item 1.2 b) i).

“The measured thickness was less than 9mm on both cars, which is the minimum thickness required by TR Article 3.5.9 e).

“I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration.”

Norris and Piastri set to be disqualified

07:46 , Kieran Jackson

Hugely dramatic moments in the title race this.

Usually, plank wear beyond the limit allowed is a slam dunk DSQ. We wait to see...

What would a double DSQ do for the championship? Well, Oscar Piastri would stay 24 points behind Lando Norris, as opposed to 30.

But more significantly, Max Verstappen would ALSO be 24 points behind Norris and would move up to joint-second!

4. Antonelli - 11.3

5. Piastri - 1.4

Lewis Hamilton pits (Lap 30/50)

04:54 , Kieran Jackson

Hamilton now dives in for his obligatory pit-stop - 3.1 seconds - and switches to mediums.

He comes out in 10th.

Piastri moves up to sixth. Antonelli has a penalty ahead in fifth, but could still go to the end, and Hulkenberg has to pit.

Essentially puts Piastri net p4.

Verstappen pits (Lap 26/50)

04:47 , Kieran Jackson

Verstappen does now dive in, 3.0-second stop, and comes out 1.2 seconds ahead of Russell in second.

Norris is 3.3 seconds behind Russell in third.

4-10: Hulkenberg, Hamilton, Antonelli, Ocon, Piastri, Leclerc, Sainz

Leclerc pits (Lap 25/50)

04:46 , Kieran Jackson

Leclerc pits and comes out just behind Piastri, but ahead of Sainz.

Keep an eye on Lewis Hamilton in fifth, who still needs to pit.

Verstappen stays out (Lap 24/50)

04:44 , Kieran Jackson

Still pumping in the lap times, Verstappen stays out - he’s 20 seconds clear of Leclerc in second.

Norris, in fourth, is two seconds off Russell.

Norris and Sainz pit (Lap 23/50)

04:42 , Kieran Jackson

Second and third both pit, 2.5 seconds for Norris, and the Brit is out in fourth.

Sainz, however, drops behind Piastri on the pit-exit.

Surely Verstappen will dive in himself now to cover?

Oscar Piastri pits (Lap 22/50)

04:41 , Kieran Jackson

Piastri dives into the pits then, 2.7 seconds, and switches to hard tyres.

The Aussie down to 10th, in clean air. Can he make some progress?

Out in front, Norris now 4.1 seconds off Verstappen with Sainz 14 seconds off in third.

A two-way battle (perhaps with Russell as an outsider third) for the win it seems...

Norris sets fastest lap (Lap 19/50)

04:37 , Kieran Jackson

With Verstappen 2.7 seconds down the road, Norris is now flying in clean air and sets a new fastest lap.

You do wonder how that George Russell pit-stop will work out for Mercedes.

Top-10: Verstappen, Norris, Sainz, Leclerc, Piastri, Hadjar, Russell, Hulkenberg, Ocon, Hamilton

Hamilton up to 10th is flying...

Stroll and Bortoleto out (Lap 5/50)

04:13 , Kieran Jackson

Bortoleto absolutely smashed into Stroll at turn 1 - and both are out!

Revenge from the Brazilian for the last race! He’s certain to get a penalty, me thinks..

Piastri and Lawson noted by race control (Lap 4/50)

04:10 , Kieran Jackson

As if it couldn’t get any worse for Oscar Piastri, the Australian is under investigation for a turn 1 incident.

I believe that’s how he lost his places - he is up from seventh to sixth now, an overtake occurring on lap 2.

VSC has now ended..

Hamilton up to 12th (Lap 2/50)

04:08 , Kieran Jackson

Seven places for Lewis Hamilton at the start!

And with debris on the track, the virtual safety car is called!

Top-10: Verstappen, Russell, Norris, Sainz, Hadjar, Piastri, Bearman, Leclerc, Alonso, Gasly

Verstappen takes the lead!

04:06 , Kieran Jackson

Nightmare start for both McLarens!

Norris sweeps across ahead of turn 1 at the start but goes deep, off the track!

Russell then takes second place around the outside at turn 3 - Norris down to third!

But Oscar Piastri has dropped places too, he’s down to seventh!
