Lapu-Lapu City gives support to student athletes

LAPU-LAPU CITY — The city has released more than P677,000 in cash incentives to local student athletes who won medals in the 2026 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA), while also granting financial assistance to members of the city’s delegation bound for the Palarong Pambansa in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.

The city government awarded a total of P677,000 to students who secured medals during the regional meet in Naga City, Cebu.

Gold medalists received P5,000 each, silver medalists got P3,000, while bronze medalists were given P1,000.

At the same time, the city government also granted P11,200 in financial assistance to each member of the delegation for the 2026 Palarong Pambansa, which will run from May 24 to 31.

The awarding ceremony took place on May 14 at the Sangguniang Panlungsod Session Hall and also served as the send-off ceremony for the city’s delegation to the national sporting event.

Lapu-Lapu City’s delegation comprises 37 athletes, bringing the total number of delegates to 69.

The athletes will compete in arnis, athletics, table tennis, volleyball, archery, basketball and boxing.

Mayor Ma. Cynthia King-Chan encouraged the athletes to uphold discipline and sportsmanship as they prepare to represent the city in the national competition.

“Beyond the medals, I want you to remember that your character is what defines you. Play with integrity, fight with courage, and respect your opponents. Carry the resilience of Lapu-Lapu in your hearts,” King-Chan said.

The mayor said the financial support reflected the city government’s confidence in the athletes’ dedication and determination to bring honor to Lapu-Lapu City.

She also announced additional incentives for medal winners in the Palarong Pambansa, with P50,000 for gold medalists, P30,000 for silver medalists and P10,000 for bronze medalists.

Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Ronald Ferrer reminded the delegates that character and discipline remain important regardless of competition results.

CVIRAA is the annual regional sporting event for student athletes in Central Visayas, with top performers qualifying for the Palarong Pambansa.

“Padayon ta sa pag-ampo ug pagsuporta sa atong mga Oponganon (Lapu-Lapu City residents) athletes. Good luck kaninyo mga Apo ni Lapu-Lapu (Let us continue praying for and supporting our Oponganon athletes. Good luck to all of you, descendants of Lapu-Lapu),” the mayor added.
