Lapu-Lapu seeks role in Asian Beach Games

LAPU-LAPU CITY — Rep. Junard Chan is exploring the city’s potential role in the 2028 Asian Beach Games as he recently discussed with Leyte 4th District Rep. Richard Gomez the Philippines’ hosting of the games and the possibility of holding competitions in Lapu-Lapu City.

Chan said the event would bring athletes from various Asian countries to compete in beach volleyball, beach handball, 3x3 basketball, beach soccer, open water swimming, swimming, jet ski, sailing, windsurfing, surfing and dragon boat.

The event also includes beach judo, beach sambo, beach wrestling, beach mixed martial arts, beach jiu-jitsu, beach karate, aquathlon, beach athletics, modern pentathlon, sport climbing and teqball.

Chan said hosting some of the competitions could increase visitor arrivals in Lapu-Lapu City and other parts of Cebu, as athletes and guests could visit tourist attractions and experience local food and culture.

“Bibo kaayo ang atong syudad o ang tibuok Sugbo nianag higayuna kay maka-expect na sab kita og bisita gikan sa lain-laing nasud (Our city and the entire province of Cebu would become more vibrant during that time because we can expect visitors from different countries),” Chan said.

He said the event could also benefit the local economy by generating more activity for the tourism sector.

“Dako kaayu ni og impact sa atong tourism industry ug sa atong ekonomiya (This could have a major impact on our tourism industry and economy),” Chan said.

Chan also expressed optimism about Lapu-Lapu City’s potential involvement in the Games.  The discussions are part of initial efforts to determine Lapu-Lapu City’s potential role in the 2028 Asian Beach Games, including its capacity to host selected competitions.

Gomez has been actively involved with the Asian Beach Games, previously serving as the Philippine team’s chef de mission in 2014.
