Latest Lewes travel advice after train derailment and ‘major incident’ declared

  • Two people were seriously injured and 18 others hurt when a train derailed between Haywards Heath and Lewes in Sussex on Thursday.
  • Disruption is expected to continue on Friday, with Southern Railway warning passengers that “all lines between Lewes and Haywards Heath are closed”.
  • The railway said journeys are “likely to take a little longer than usual” due to the closure, however there are rail replacement buses in place between Haywards Heath and Lewes.
  • Meanwhile, it has “added extra carriages to services between Brighton and Hastings and Brighton and Seaford wherever possible” and those looking to travel towards Hastings or Eastbourne will “need to change trains at Brighton”.
  • Customers have been advised to “allow at least 60 minutes of additional journey time”, and it is also possible to travel on selected services at no further cost.
