Kota Kinabalu: Counsel Datuk Ram Singh (pic) has suggested the Coroner's Court to consider issuing guidelines to help prevent similar incidents following reports of another female student falling at the same school attended by Zara Qairina Mahathir.
Speaking to reporters after Friday's inquest proceedings, which coincided with the first anniversary of Zara's death, Ram said it was saddening that another incident had reportedly occurred before the inquest had concluded.
He said he hoped the inquest would not only determine the manner of Zara's death but also enable the Coroner to recommend measures to help prevent students from falling or jumping from school buildings.
Ram also urged the school to take more proactive steps and questioned why the State Education Department (JPN) issued a statement only two days after the latest reported incident, adding that he hoped the student would receive appropriate counselling.
Meanwhile, counsel Shahlan Jufri called for a thorough investigation into the reported incident at the same school, saying the matter should be investigated in accordance with established procedures and declining to comment further.
