Kota Kinabalu: A lawyer representing a student witness in the inquest into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir lodged a police report here, Friday, over the leak of confidential witness statements on social media.
Datuk Ram Singh said the leaked information contained personal details of witnesses, including their full names, home addresses and identification card numbers.
He claimed that a TikTok video, uploaded under the account name “SutekUke Link”, displayed the personal details of the children (students) involved in the case.
“I was informed on Sept 19 that statements from witnesses in the Kota Kinabalu Coroner’s Court proceedings had been circulated widely on social media platforms and through WhatsApp.
“The leak has caused fear and emotional distress to the student witness I represent in the case.
“When I met the witness outside court, their parents were in tears and visibly traumatised by the exposure,” Ram said in his report filed at Luyang Police Station.
Ram added that the disclosure of such information was a serious breach of confidentiality and potentially violated laws protecting children and witnesses, particularly under the Child Act 2001.
Hence, he urged the police to investigate the matter, enforce the relevant laws and take stern action against those responsible for the leak.
