KOTA KINABALU: A lawyer has urged police to act on two reports lodged after a Form Two student was allegedly assaulted at a school hostel in Sabah on 7 September.

In a statement on Monday, lawyer Nurshalilah Fauzan Mailin (pic) said her client, the victim’s family, reported that the boy had been kicked in the stomach, slapped on the face and punched in the nose during the incident.

She said the Sabah Education Department’s move to suspend the alleged bully contradicted the Ministry of Education’s anti-bullying guidelines introduced on 3 November 2023, which prohibit disciplinary action while police investigations are ongoing.

The lawyer stressed that police reports had been filed in Papar on 9 September and in Kota Kinabalu on 13 September, and that the case should be investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for causing hurt.

She called on police to investigate both reports thoroughly and urged the Sabah Education Department to comply with the ministry’s set procedures in handling bullying cases.
