Lawyers for the parents of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, who are currently out on bail, have not ruled out the possibility of seeking additional police protection for their clients, according to a report by Malaysiakini.
Fahmi Abd Moin, the lawyer representing Zayn Rayyan's father, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, stated that they are vigilantly monitoring the situation and will contemplate further protection measures if any threats emerge. "At present, we are observing the circumstances, and should the situation escalate to a point where my client's safety is at risk, I will discuss the need for additional protection with him," Fahmi was quoted as saying.
When questioned about the necessity for enhanced police protection, Fahmi highlighted the case's high-profile nature as a potential reason for such measures.
This development comes in the wake of the alleged leak of police investigation documents by the whistleblower "Edisi Siasat," which occurred less than a day after the couple entered not-guilty pleas to charges of negligence that allegedly could have caused physical harm to their child.
Similarly, Mahmud Jumaat, the lawyer representing Zayn Rayyan's mother, Ismanira Abdul Manaf, expressed that he is considering requesting extra protection for her, citing concerns for both her physical safety and mental well-being.
"I am not only worried about her physical safety but also the mental stress she is undergoing," Mahmud remarked. He emphasized that his client is being subjected to public shaming despite the questionable authenticity of the leaked investigation documents.
Furthermore, Mahmud pointed out that any public speculation following the charges against his client could be regarded as contempt of court or sub judice.
The couple faces accusations of neglecting their six-year-old son, Zayn Rayyan, in a manner that allegedly led to potential physical injury. These charges fall under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and Section 34 of the same legislation. If found guilty, they could face severe penalties, including a maximum fine of RM50,000, up to 20 years of imprisonment, or both.
The parents were initially apprehended in Puncak Alam, Selangor, on May 31 and subsequently remanded for 13 days starting from June 1 to aid a murder investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
