KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Vice President David Ong praised Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor’s decision to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), describing it as a bold step towards inclusivity and greater opportunities for Sabahans.
He said the move is especially meaningful for students from Chinese Independent Schools, who can now use UEC results to apply for State scholarships and pursue studies in State-owned colleges.
Ong also highlighted that UEC recognition benefits not only Chinese students but also a growing number of non-Chinese students who choose this pathway.
By reducing financial burdens and widening access, he said the decision strengthens fairness in education and ensures that the UEC serves as a qualification that “opens doors, not closes them.”He urged the State Cabinet to provide clarity on whether conditions will be imposed, if UEC holders can apply for jobs in the civil service, and whether State-linked institutions will fully accept the certificate.
Ong further suggested setting aside quotas for UEC students in scholarships and civil service recruitment to ensure the recognition translates into tangible opportunities.
LDP expressed strong support for the Chief Minister’s move, stressing that clarity and transparency are essential so that students, parents, and the public understand the full benefits of UEC recognition.
