KUALA LUMPUR – Could the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) be heading for a leadership shake-up?
Barely six months after its congress, speculation is mounting that senior positions within the governing body could soon be vacated, with several top figures expected to step down next week.
According to sources within the football fraternity and the association, the potential reshuffle stems from some individuals being unable to fully commit to their roles.
“There is a strong likelihood of changes in FAM’s top leadership, as certain office-bearers are expected to vacate their posts due to other pressing commitments,” said one source familiar with the matter.
“Several existing executive committee (Exco) members have been advised to remain on standby and could be promoted to fill the vacancies.
“If matters cannot be resolved, there is also the possibility of convening another congress in the coming months to ensure new appointments are made on merit through a voting process.
“However, holding another congress within such a short time would likely contravene FAM’s constitution and incur significant costs, making it more probable that standby Exco members will step in,” the source added.
It is understood that the positions in question include the president and deputy president posts.
FAM honorary president Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin is expected to meet Exco members on Monday to address the issue.
“Given the seriousness of the matter, Hamidin will be stepping in to find a resolution. As the association’s spokesperson, he must also brief the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS), the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and FIFA.
“He will focus on persuading the individuals concerned to remain in their positions and explore ways to resolve the issue. The outcome of this meeting should become clearer next week,” the source said.
When contacted by Scoop, FAM secretary-general Datuk Noor Azman Rahman declined to comment.
At the 61st FAM Congress in February, Datuk Joehari Mohd Ayub was elected as the new president, succeeding Hamidin, who chose not to contest.
