League One Volleyball welcomes Jaja Santiago

JAJA Santiago, also known as Sachi Minowa in Japan where she plays professional volleyball, has officially signed with League One Volleyball (LOVB) in the United States, adding another impressive chapter to her international career.

The LOVB announced the news on their social media channels on Thursday.

“Adding a new country to our list: the Philippines! Welcome, Sachi ‘Jaja’ Minowa,” the post said.

“Jaja is a talented middle blocker and Japanese SV. League Champion, with multiple Best Spiker and Best Blocker awards. Welcome, Jaja!”

Santiago will be the first homegrown Filipino to compete in the American professional volleyball league.

The 6-foot-5 middle blocker previously hinted the news on July 18, 2026 when she was watched the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) games at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City, but said that she will wait for the official announcement before confirming the news.

While the American league begins in January 2027, Santiago is uncertain if she can still suit up for any team in the Philippines.

“I need to stay active since the league won’t start until January. I’ll be flying to the US in November, so there’s a huge time gap. I need to make sure I’m in shape by the time I arrive,” she said.

“I am still thinking. What I told Taka (Minowa) is that I want to rest. I am not sure right now, but if ever and if my schedule permits ... when I’m back in the Philippines, I want to spend time with my family and maybe travel with Taka. So we’re looking to see if our schedule will click. But who knows, right?” she added, leaving the door open.

The 30-year-old gunner played in Japan in 2020, where she won a championship with Saitama Ageo Medics in the Japan V.Cup, and proceeded to join the Division 1 in the SV. League from 2023 to 2025.

Santiago won a championship with Osaka Marvelous in 2025.

The former National University varsity player is married to former Akari Chargers head coach Takayuki Minowa and gained Japanese citizenship in 2024.

During her collegiate years, she earned a Most Valuable Player (MVP) title and three Best Spiker awards.

Santiago also earned three major awards during the 2021 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Open Conference with an MVP, Finals MVP and Second Best Middle Blocker Awards. NICOLE ANNE BUGAUISAN
