The Lebanese Army entered the southern border town of Dibbin on Thursday after confirming that Israeli forces had withdrawn from the area, in the latest step toward implementing a US-backed ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel.
In a statement, the army said one of its units had removed earthen barriers erected by Israeli troops on the road leading to Dibbin.
Army units began a gradual deployment in and around the town in coordination with the ceasefire monitoring mechanism and peacekeepers from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the statement said.
Specialized engineering teams were also conducting surveys and clearing unexploded ordnance left behind in the area.
The army urged residents not to approach the area and to follow military instructions until the deployment process is complete.
Lebanese media reported that army units, accompanied by bulldozers, advanced along the Marjayoun-Dibbin-Ibl al-Saqi road before deploying inside the town.
Israeli troops had entered Dibbin during their latest ground operations in southern Lebanon before withdrawing on Thursday.
