LeBron James has yet to discuss his future with the Los Angeles Lakers, with just over 24 hours remaining before the start of free agency.
The biggest domino for the Lakers’ offseason plans will be LeBron’s decision as a free agent, which will dictate how much of their phantom cap space can actually be usable.
If the Lakers wanted LeBron to inform them in advance of his plans so they could build their strategy accordingly, they made a mistake, based on what’s being reported.
Lakers haven’t heard from LeBron James before free agency opens
Brian Windhorst reported on the Hoop Collective podcast that the Lakers have confirmed to LeBron’s representatives that they want to re-sign the 41-year-old forward. However, no offer has been made as LeBron hasn’t made himself available to meet with the Lakers this offseason.
“They reached out to LeBron representative Rich Paul and said ‘We’d like to have LeBron back.’ But there have been no further talks. From what I understand, the Lakers have not made an offer. But LeBron, from what I understand as of today, when I got this update, LeBron has not, you know, made himself available to meet with the Lakers yet.”
LeBron did imply at the end of the Lakers season that he would take as much time as possible before making a decision, which is what he is doing.
The Lakers will likely make moves to build their roster irrespective of LeBron’s decision because Luka Doncic’s timeline is at stake, but LeBron’s indecision might make the Lakers feel squeamish about a potential exit.
LeBron James’ non-Lakers options might be appealing
While the Lakers can comfortably pay LeBron more than any other team, the 41-year-old might have other motivations to consider for what might be his final season in the NBA.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are the franchise he made champions in 2016, and he could return for one final run to help push them over the top after a Conference Finals sweep in 2026.
The Golden State Warriors have Stephen Curry, a player James has repeatedly said is someone he wants to be teammates with.
Neither of these teams can give LeBron the contract the Lakers can, but the franchise might need to focus more on creating a roster that LeBron views as a potentially contending one. If the Lakers can do that, James will definitely take a quick meeting with the Lakers and iron his future out.
