LeBron James named several personal factors that will shape his retirement decision after the Los Angeles Lakers were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder, but Bronny James was not one of them.

The comments came after the Lakers’ 115-110 Game 4 loss to Oklahoma City, a result that sealed a 4-0 sweep and ended James’ 23rd NBA season. That made every word about his future feel more important.

What stood out was not only who James mentioned, but who he did not. His answer included his daughter Zhuri, his younger son Bryce James, and his wife Savannah, but not Bronny, his Lakers teammate.

LeBron James retirement answer depends on love for practice

As Lakers reporter Ryan Ward shared after the Lakers’ playoff exit, LeBron James started his retirement answer by focusing on whether he still loves the daily work required to play.

“I don’t know. I think for me it’s about the process. Like, if I can commit to still being in love with the process of showing up to the arena five and a half hours before a game to start preparing for a game.

“Giving everything I got, diving for loose balls and doing everything that you know that it takes to go out and play,” James said.

He added, “Showing up to practices and never calling it practice. I really hate that term. Preparing my body, preparing my mind, preparing to practice, to put the work in.”

That answer made sense because James has always built his longevity around preparation. At this stage, the question is not only whether he can still play, but whether he still wants everything that comes before the games.

LeBron James made family central without naming Bronny James

James then moved from the process of playing to the people who will help shape his decision. That is where the Bronny omission became even harder to ignore.

“So, I think for me, I’ve always been in love with the process and not the aftermath of like, ‘Okay, well, we won that game, or we won a championship.’ I’ve always enjoyed the process more than the outcome. I think that will be a big factor,” he continued.

“Then also have a conversation with my 12-year-old daughter. That’s a big factor. My 19-year-old son is entering his second year at Arizona. My wife as well.

“They’re a huge factor in any decision I make. So, they’d be a big part of it as well,” James stated.

That list pointed toward Zhuri, Bryce, and Savannah as the voices closest to the decision. It also framed retirement as a family conversation rather than a basketball storyline.

Bronny’s absence does not prove tension or distance. It may simply mean James views his oldest son differently now because they already shared the court and already reached that milestone.

Still, the wording matters. When James discussed the future after another painful playoff exit, he named the family members who will weigh most heavily on the choice.
