Leeds United vs Newcastle United

18:26

Though Howe is without a couple of key players going forward, the Newcastle coach still has options to call upon from the bench, with Barnes and Elanga more than capable of stretching the play and causing headaches for opposing defences - especially with their pace late on. Leeds United may opt to protect the booked Gnonto and could deploy Okafor - recently arrived from AC Milan - in that position, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be looking for a chance to score his first goal for his new side, after a rather disappointing appearance against Sheffield Wednesday in midweek.

Leeds United vs Newcastle United

18:22

A half of few chances comes to an end at Elland Road, with Leeds and Newcastle still looking for the breakthrough that may be worth all three points. An incredibly even contest by most metrics including xG (0.47 to 0.34 for the hosts) and possession (52 to 48 per cent for the Magpies), it was the visitors who looked to create the better of the chances - only to be left disappointed by the lack of presence in front of goal. Both Livramento and Murphy delivered crosses that weren’t met by Osula, while the striker’s dangerous effort after a quarter-hour was blocked on the line by Gudmundsson. Despite failing to register a shot on target, Farke’s team were a constant threat going forward through the pace of Gnonto and James, who won a pair of potentially dangerous set-pieces that were not capitalised upon.

Struijk’s lovely pass over the top releases Gnonto, who cuts inside and brings Nmecha into play, but the striker’s layoff to Longstaff is put behind the oncoming midfielder. Looking to make amends, Longstaff and Gruev combine to win the ball back for Stach, whose effort from distance misses the target.

Trippier spots the outwards run of Osula and plays a disguised ball down the right flank for the striker, who holds off Rodon’s initial challenge with a show of strength before losing possession to the backtracking Gudmundsson.

Leeds United vs Newcastle United

18:03

There’s been nothing to separate the two sides after a half-hour played at Elland Road, with the xG difference between Leeds and Newcastle a marginal 0.03 (0.29 to 0.26 for the hosts). There’s been a combined five efforts - none of which have hit the target - while possession remains almost even, with the Magpies edging it slightly (52 to 48 per cent).

Leeds United vs Newcastle United

Trippier uses a free-kick inside the centre-circle to launch a dangerous delivery to the edge of Leeds’ 18-yard box, but Stach’s backwards header gives Perri a chance to collect the ball calmly.

Leeds United vs Newcastle United

Osula is making his first Premier League start since February 2024 for Sheffield United against Brighton and Hove Albion. Each of his last 22 appearances in the competition prior to today had come off the bench.

Leeds United vs Newcastle United

17:50

OFF THE LINE! Livramento turns Bogle in midfield and plays a pass down the line for Ramsey, who gets to the edge of the area and picks out the feet of Osula on the penalty spot. The striker’s first touch bobbles the ball and he hits it on the half-volley to generate more power, but a well-placed Gudmundsson puts in a key block!

Leeds United vs Newcastle United

17:48

Burn’s pass to Guimaraes in midfield is underhit, allowing Longstaff - formerly of Newcastle - to snap into a ball-winning tackle that spreads possession to Stach. Looking to hit it back the way it came, the midfielder hits a diagonal over the top for James that sails directly behind for a goal-kick.

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!

Leeds United vs Newcastle United

17:07

Newcastle were only able to secure a point on the first day of the new season despite a 24-minute man advantage against Aston Villa, and followed that up with a heartbreaking last-second defeat to Liverpool amidst the Alexander Isak transfer saga. Without both Joelinton and Anthony Gordon due to injury and suspension, Eddie Howe will need to be creative in search of just the Magpies’ second win over Leeds in the Premier League in their last seven meetings.

Leeds United vs Newcastle United

17:06

Leeds haven’t managed to build upon the performance that saw them mark their return to top-flight football with a 1-0 victory over Everton on the opening day, losing 5-0 to Arsenal last weekend before a shock EFL Cup exit at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday. Looking to get back to winning ways ahead of the international break, Daniel Farke’s side will be desperate to make the most of the home-field advantage, after a run of 18 league games without defeat at Elland Road.
