MANILA, Philippines — The portrait of Senator Loren Legarda has been taken down from the Wall of Empowered Women at Assumption College in Makati City.
The school’s student council issued a call to take down the portrait on Friday, saying the recent actions of the senator, an alumna of the school, “no longer reflect the values that Assumption upholds.”
In a statement titled “The women we honor must embody the values we teach” posted on Facebook, the council said that their call to take down Legarda’s portrait “was rooted not in hostility, but in accountability, integrity and fidelity to the values Assumption seeks to instill in every Assumptionista.”
“Recognition within our institution must reflect not only achievement, but also character, responsibility and moral courage,” it said.
Legarda was among the senators who voted for Alan Peter Cayetano as Senate President earlier this week, two days before the transmission of the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte to the Senate.
“The Wall of Empowerment represents leaders whose actions continue to embody the principles of truth, justice and accountability. We believe it is our responsibility to speak when those principles are at stake,” the council said.
