Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has said he will unable to reinvest all of the money recouped for Wesley Fofana.
The French defender is on the verge of joining Chelsea in a deal reportedly worth more than £70m.
Asked how much of the Fofana payment will go towards strengthening the squad, Rodgers told LeicestershireLive: "There have been discussions but it's certainly not going to be the whole fee.
"I think there's part of that that will go to Saint-Etienne as well, plus there's the situation that the club is in. There will be some resources to be able to do some business.
"I was hoping he would (stay) because he's a top class operator, and that's what you want as a coach if you want to improve and develop.
"You hope he would be here. But football changes and it can change very quickly. You have to be able to adapt and accept that."
