LHDN urges Malaysians to request e-Invoices for tax relief claims under new digital filing plan

THE Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) is accelerating plans to modernise the country’s tax administration system by encouraging taxpayers to request e-invoices for purchases linked to personal tax relief claims beginning this year.

The initiative forms part of a broader transition towards a pre-filled tax return framework that will automatically populate selected relief information into Income Tax Return Forms using transaction data generated through the national e-invoicing system.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Inland Revenue Board said the move represented a proactive step towards the implementation of a pilot project involving pre-filled tax relief information for the 2026 Year of Assessment.

Under the planned system, eligible expenses recorded through verified e-invoices could eventually be integrated directly into taxpayers’ filings, reducing manual documentation and simplifying compliance procedures.

“To obtain an e-invoice, buyers need to provide their identification number or tax identification number (TIN) to sellers to enable the e-invoice to be issued accurately.

“Among the expenses that have the potential to be pre-filled are purchases of personal computers or smartphones, lifestyle-related expenses, insurance payments and childcare fees, as well as other relief categories determined by the authorities,” the statement said.

LHDN said the use of e-invoices would not only strengthen record management and storage for taxpayers but would also allow individuals to review transaction details and tax relief claims more efficiently through the MyInvois portal.

The agency added that the digital initiative is expected to improve transparency, accuracy and efficiency within the tax reporting system while reducing the administrative burden on taxpayers during annual filing periods.

Taxpayers seeking assistance or clarification regarding e-invoicing procedures can contact LHDN offices nationwide, the agency’s dedicated e-invoice helpdesk, the MyInvois live chat service or the official support email channel for further guidance. - May 10, 2026
