Lidl joins Tesco and Sainsbury’s as one of UK’s five largest supermarkets

  • Lidl has become the UK's fifth-largest supermarket, surpassing Morrisons, after an 8.8 per cent increase in sales compared to last year.
  • The German-owned discount retailer now holds an 8.6 per cent share of the grocery market and has been the fastest-growing physical grocery shop for 35 consecutive months.
  • The Lidl Plus loyalty app is reported to account for half of the supermarket's growth over the past year.
  • Tesco remains the dominant market leader with a 28.2 per cent share, followed by Sainsbury's at 15.2 per cent, while Asda saw its takings decrease by 3 per cent.
  • Grocery price inflation has eased to 3.1 per cent, the lowest since December 2024, but the Food and Drink Federation has warned of significantly higher costs later this year.
