Kota Kinabalu: It will take at least six to eight months before the state Cabinet can review the re-implemented hotel licensing fee structure effective Jan. 1, which industry players warned may spell doom for Sabah’s tourism.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment (Kepkas) Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew said the Sabah Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) met her twice on the issue.

“I wrote to MAH last week to explain the situation. The matter has been brought to Cabinet which has maintained its decision with City Hall to find the best outcome.

“We are still seeing what else can we do about this jump. I have met the Mayor who explained this to me also. I do not deny the new fees will affect Sabah’s tourism but we will be seeking ways to negotiate. I was told that a few three star hotels may be forced to close shop. I am monitoring the situation until another meeting is held to discuss the impact,” she said Sunday.

Hotels now have to pay rates per occupied room each month based on City Halls category of first, second and third class list.

MAH Sabah and Labuan Chapter Chairman Hafizan Wong earlier argued the steep increase in cost saying a 100-room “second class” hotel would have to pay RM4,800 per month compared to the previous RM1,000 yearly.

Meanwhile, she said revised regulations for Mount Kinabalu hikers should be clarified by next month. The call came after the deaths of two elderly hikers due to altitude mountain sickness this year.

Mandatory health checkups prior to climbing and emergency aid kits at each checkpoints were among suggestions.
