SHAH ALAM, Nov 26 - Men have been urged to understand that women should be a source of calm within the household, not an outlet for stress or anger.

Pertubuhan Kebajikan Amal Silaturahim Isteri-isteri Harapan Kasih Malaysia deputy chairman Datin Seri Azlin Hezri said that life pressures cannot be used as an excuse to raise one’s hand or commit any form of violence against women.

Statistics have revealed that cases of domestic violence and abuse against women are increasingly worrying, requiring serious and continuous attention.

"Men or husbands are the protectors of women. They must care for them, provide sustenance, ensure shelter and offer protection as encouraged in the Quran.

“It is not just about providing food or material and emotional support, but also about safeguarding women’s emotional well-being. You may reprimand your wife, but do not do it in a way that demeans, erases or undermines her dignity,” she said.

Azlin was speaking at the official launch of the Women Against Violence Day programme, organised by the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), at the MBSA Convention Centre today.

She also hopes the programme will serve as a starting point for ongoing action and encourages the community to be more aware of their surroundings if they hear sounds or signs suggesting possible abuse.

"In the past, people used to say not to meddle in others’ affairs, but now we must sometimes be aware. We must not wait until a neighbour dies due to abuse,” Azlin said.

Around 300 participants joined the programme, which also featured a Forum on Addressing Violence and exhibitions by government agencies.
