MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said light to moderate and sometimes heavy rains were possible in parts of Luzon because of the shear line.
In the 5 p.m. weather update on Tuesday, Pagasa Weather Specialist Benison Estareja explained that the shear line is where warm and cold winds collide.
"So when we have colliding winds, the tendency is that there will be thick clouds and at times heavy rains," he said in Filipino and English.
"So expect, within the next 24 hours, light to moderate with at times heavy rains are possible here in the Bicol Region, especially in the Camarines provinces and Catanduanes, as well as in Quezon province, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, and, later on, here in several parts of Calabarzon, Aurora, and Isabela," he said.
Pagasa forecast that localized thunderstorms would affect some parts of the Philippines including Metro Manila.
Estareja said the northeast monsoon "is bringing just light rains overnight here in Batanes, Cagayan province, and Apayao."
He told the public to expect isolated light rain showers in some areas of the Cordillera region, Ilocos, and parts of Central Luzon.
While no gale warning was issued, seas could be moderate to strong (wave heights of 1.5 to 3.4 meters) up to Wednesday afternoon in the coastal waters of northern Luzon, Aurora, Quezon, and Bicol. This is based on information shown during the weather update and what Estareja said. "Up to 3.4 meters..., dangerous for our small sea vessels, especially for" fishers, he said.
