Lily Allen forced to cancel concert at last minute after sudden illness

Lily Allen has been forced to cancel her Auckland concert with just hours to go after falling ill with a "viral infection".

The 41-year-old singer apologised to fans in Auckland, New Zealand, after the last-minute cancellation. The concert, which was scheduled for Tuesday, would have been her first performance in the country since 2019.

Writing on her Instagram Story, she said: "To my West End Girls in Auckland, I am so sorry to have to tell you that I have come down with a viral infection and am unable to perform tonight.

"I was really looking forward to seeing you all and am absolutely gutted to be letting you down.

"For those who have travelled all the way here, please accept my apology."

The performer confirmed that "all tickets will be refunded" and stated that she hopes "to be able to come back to see you soon".

She added: "Thank you so much for understanding."

Promoter Frontier Touring reshared the announcement on its own Instagram page, adding: "Wishing @lilyallen a speedy recovery."

Allen is currently on the road for her West End Girl tour, which experienced major alterations during its North American leg earlier this year.

The singer previously acknowledged that poor ticket sales forced the restructuring, which resulted in multiple arena dates being moved to theatre venues and a concert in Montreal being called off entirely.

Speaking to The Cut magazine last month, she said: "The ticket sales weren’t there. I think people sometimes have a misconception about artist greed.

"And, you know, maybe there are artists who are greedy, but let me tell you a little bit about the mechanics of how these things work:

"I don’t call up MSG and all of these other venues and say, 'I’d like to book these dates, please. Thank you very much. I think I can fill these arenas.' "

Allen explained that a "company’s own promoters have data machines that tell them whether they’re going to be able to sell these tickets".

Acts are subsequently guaranteed a "certain amount" alongside assurances that promoters believe they "can sell out tickets".

She continued: "I felt a little bit uneasy about it from the start. I said to my manager, 'Are you sure? This seems like a stretch.'

"And he was like, 'This is what they’re telling me.' So we accepted it. And as time went on, it just looked like it wasn’t gonna happen."
