KUALA LUMPUR – The government has announced that contributions to the Non-Employment Injury Scheme (Lindung 24 Jam) under the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) are no longer mandatory for local workers, effective immediately.

Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri Ramanan Ramakrishnan said contributions will now be voluntary for Malaysians, while remaining compulsory for foreign workers under existing legal provisions.

He explained that the Cabinet’s decision was made after taking into account public feedback on the scheme.

“Local workers may now choose whether to contribute to the Lindung 24 Jam Scheme based on their individual needs and circumstances.

The implementation mechanism and the process for voluntary participation by local workers will be announced by Perkeso soon,” he said in a statement today.

Ramanan stressed that although participation is now optional, the scheme remains vital as it provides protection for workers involved in accidents outside working hours and away from the workplace, including during daily activities.

He added that the Human Resource Ministry will review the scheme’s implementation by year-end, covering policy direction, effectiveness and funding sustainability.

“If necessary, the outcome of the review will be tabled in Parliament under the proposed amendments to the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4),” he said.

Ramanan also assured that Perkeso will continue efforts to raise public awareness on the benefits of the scheme and the importance of social security protection. - July 9, 2026
