The Cabinet agrees to review the e-invoice system and EPF contributions for non-citizen workers, says deputy prime minister.

JOHOR BAHRU: The Cabinet has agreed to review the implementation of the e-invoice system and Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributions involving foreign workers.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the decision was reached during today’s Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the review would be conducted, among other things, to look into the possibility of postponing the implementation of both measures, which were deemed burdensome to traders and employers.

“The request was put forward by BN (Barisan Nasional), and I would like to thank the Prime Minister, the Unity Government and all Cabinet members for their support for the recommendations made,” he said at the Majlis Ramah Mesra Bersama Masyarakat Iskandar Puteri here yesterday (July 8).

The Rural and Regional Development Minister said the review was important in view of the current global economic uncertainties faced by the country following the crisis in West Asia.

The e-invoice system was implemented from Aug 1, 2024, as part of efforts to strengthen tax administration and ease the compliance burden on small and medium enterprises, while the mandatory 2 per cent EPF contribution for non-citizen workers took effect from October last year’s salary.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid, when met by reporters after the ceremony, expressed his appreciation to the Prime Minister for approving the 10-year extension of the tax exemption period for Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT).

He said the move reflected the government’s concern for education issues regardless of race or political affiliation.

“Yes, TAR UMT is associated with MCA, but this decision is important because those accepted there are not only children of MCA members, but also children of DAP members as well as those from Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.

However, Ahmad Zahid said higher education institution would still be required to submit its annual financial and audit reports to the Ministry of Finance.
