Finding an affordable room to rent in Malaysia can be challenging, but one unusual rental arrangement in Penang has caught the attention of Malaysians online.
According to BuzzKini, a property in Batu Kawan recently sparked discussion after photos showed a living room divided into makeshift sleeping spaces using office partitions.
The alleged monthly rental was RM280.
Living room turned into a rental space
The arrangement came to light after a netizen shared photos and screenshots of a conversation with an individual believed to be the landlord.
Instead of a proper bedroom with walls and a door, the space featured orange and white office partitions set up in the living room.

A single bed and mattress could be seen behind the partitions, with the sleeping area located near the entrance and staircase.
The partitions did not fully enclose the space, raising concerns about the privacy and comfort of anyone staying there.
The unusual arrangement quickly drew reactions from Malaysians, with many criticising the lack of privacy.
Some pointed out that the sleeping area was located in a shared living room, where other tenants could easily walk past.
Others raised concerns about how a tenant would get enough rest or enjoy personal space without proper walls or a door.
Another highlighted how difficult it could be for someone sleeping in the living room to switch off the lights at night, especially if other tenants were still using the space.
The arrangement also prompted criticism from those who felt that landlords should provide more suitable living conditions instead of converting shared spaces into bedrooms.
However, the authenticity of the alleged rental listing has also been questioned.
The claim has not been independently verified, and it remains unclear whether the living room was genuinely being offered for rent as described.
