LKIM seeks higher Budget 2027 allocation to strengthen fishermen’s capabilities, upgrade infrastructure and expand aquaculture and artificial reef projects
MELAKA: The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) has submitted an allocation request under Budget 2027 to strengthen fishermen’s capabilities and boost the country’s fisheries sector.
Its chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil said LKIM received a total allocation of RM140 million this year and hoped the allocation under Budget 2027 would be higher.
“Among the areas being given attention are increased allocations for aquaculture, infrastructure development such as jetties and artificial reefs, housing for fishermen’s welfare, as well as the continuation of existing incentives including the cost-of-living allowance, fish landing incentive and fuel subsidy.
“However, the amount requested under Budget 2027 cannot be disclosed as the process is still ongoing and subject to the government’s decision,” he told reporters after an engagement session with fishermen in the Telok Mas area at the Tanjong Nibong Fishermen’s Jetty here today.
Meanwhile, he said LKIM would assess the feasibility of a breakwater project in Telok Mas to improve fishermen’s infrastructure in the area.
He said he had instructed the engineering team at LKIM headquarters to visit the area immediately to assess the feasibility of the project and the allocation required.
Muhammad Faiz said LKIM had previously built a jetty costing RM800,000 in Telok Mas last year, while a fishermen’s shed costing RM400,000 would be built this year to improve facilities for fishermen.
“There are 50 active fishermen here, and they receive fuel subsidies from the government. These are among the assistance provided by the government to them,” he said.
Muhammad Faiz said LKIM would increase aquaculture capacity and implement artificial reef projects to boost fish catches in Melaka by creating more fish breeding grounds in state waters.
He said LKIM has land for an aquaculture project in Sebatu, Jasin, while artificial reefs were also deployed in the Sebatu area, including Telok Mas, last year.
Muhammad Faiz also said that the engagement session allowed the Telok Mas fishing community to raise current concerns, highlight technical issues at sea and propose constructive improvements.
About 60 fishermen from the B40 category also received food kits at the event to help ease their financial burden.
