Logging in wildlife habitat: Illegals jailed

SANDAKAN: Four illegal immigrants were sentenced to eight months’ jail each for felling trees and trespassing into the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary.

Sessions Court Judge Roslinda Razali imposed the sentence on Nasir Abdullah, Parihin Ariffin, Arif Ariffin and Firman Tompo after they pleaded guilty to the charges Friday.

On the first count, they committed the offence at about 11.31am on Aug 11 at Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary Lot 4.

They were accused of felling trees within the area without lawful permission.

On the second count, they were found to have trespassed into the sanctuary at the same time and place.

They were each charged under Sections 17(1)(a) and 15(1) of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997, punishable under amended Subsections 17(3) and 15(4), as well as Section 96(7) of the same Enactment.

Wildlife Department Prosecuting Officer Primus Lambut appeared for the prosecution, while the four were unrepresented.

The court ordered the four to be referred to the Immigration Department for further action upon completion of their jail sentences.
